Rock scaling underway on rail trail, area remains closed to public

Media Release: June 8th, 2023

The Shuswap, North Okanagan, Splatsin

Citizens in the area of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail near Sicamous may be hearing construction noise from machinery and rock scaling, which is using a technique of applying special bags inflated with compressed air to dislodge the rock.

But it’s important that public access to the trail remain with people’s ears, not their eyes.

The public needs to remember the trail is closed to everyone except authorized workers. It is an active construction zone with hazardous work taking place.

The area has been fenced off and signed for people to keep off the trails. Boaters in the area are also reminded to remain clear of the trail and to stay out of the construction zone.

Currently, the rock scaling team is nearing completion of work at the 5-kilometre mark below the Mara Hills Golf Course. After that, work will commence around the 12-kilometre mark.
